How Is Your Foundation?

In the last few weeks, I have heard references to a very common part of the bible. I even quote that part a lot and use it in conversation. Last night, It hit me in an entirely new way and I thought to share.

Read with me: ‘

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed[d] in heaven.” -Matthew 16:13-19 (NKJV)

You know this portion of scripture right?

Yesterday, as I ruminated over it again in my mind, I wondered, Why would Jesus ask his  disciples the questions he asked? I mean these guys were disciples. This was not a gathering of the crowd, it was the gathering of the core group. The ‘we have given up everything to follow Jesus’ group, Why would Jesus ask them those questions?

Isn’t it interesting though that even though they all had answers to the question of public opinion about who Christ was, only Peter could answer the question of personal belief?

Scripture tells us why. God revealed the truth of Jesus’ Identity to Peter. It was not based on his flesh and blood experiences of walking with God.

Consequently,on that revelation, the church of God was established and continues to be established today,

Listen, YOU are the church of God. The minute you gave your life to Christ and He came to dwell in you by the Holy Spirit, you became the church.

What personal belief are you as the church built on? Is it a God given revelation of Christ or the flesh and blood understanding of men?

Are you more versed in public opinion than you are about the unchanging truths of God?

Let me reiterate, If all you know about God is what your pastor/man of God tells you, you do not know God . If you do not know God,  Your foundation as a Church of God is faulty. We all know what happens to buildings with false foundations-they collapse and usually take unsuspecting  casualties with them.

What are the built on?

Ask God to reveal to you if and where there are weaknesses in your foundation and help you to fix it with the right tools from his word.
