Despite The Pain
A few Sundays ago I was in Church and during the bible reading, we read a scripture that I have heard preachers refer to and I think I must have used times too. That day, we read that scripture in context and my eyes pooped open so wide.
Note: I beg you by the mercies of God, never read a verse of the bible in isolation again. Always understand context.
I’m not saying a single verse or even half of a verse can’t speak to you, that happens to me all the time, but please read in context.
The reading that day was from Isaiah 30: 15-23. Read it when you have some time.
Verses 20-21 struck me. Hard. Read with me:
‘And though the Lord gives you
The bread of adversity and the water of affliction,
Yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore,
But your eyes shall see your teachers.
21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”
Whenever you turn to the right hand
Or whenever you turn to the left.
I think it struck me that hard because I am very familiar with verse 21 but no one ever told me about the preceding verse.
Listen, Contrary to popular opinion and what your emotions may be telling you, The presence of pain, affliction or suffering is not the absence of God.
God works in spite, despite and through your pain and painful seasons.
The scripture above says that during these seasons, He sends us teachers- visible ones. He speaks to give us direction, despite the pain!
I don’t know about you but this is a realization that has and will continue to change my life.
No more feeling abandoned by God or clueless when pain, affliction and suffering hits.
We know they will come.
What a relief to know by scripture, clearly, and not by sermonizing that God dis not only present in those seasons, but that He sends teachers and He speaks direction.
I just have to listen.
So when pain strikes, I need to remember to ask ‘What’s my lesson? What do YOU want me to learn and where do I turn?
I’m now doubly sure that He’s with me and He answers.
Who’s with me?
