Have you ever been shocked by your thoughts? Have you ever found your mind going down a certain road and you could not even believe it went there?
If you’ve not, fantastic. If you have, Read on.
As a person I’ve found that I have an amazing capacity for deep and long thinking. I’ve been told it’s a function of the mix of my temperaments.
In an earlier post, I shared how I realised that I had to choose what I thought about. Read that post here: https://tobilobaajayi.wordpress.com/2013/08/06/what-are-you-thinking-about/
Today I stumbled on a part of another common scripture that’s quite instructive for me and as many who struggle to think the right thoughts.
Read with me:[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),….2 Corinthians 10:5
I just sucker punched at …’we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ….’
A lot of the times, our thoughts lead us and we think that’s fine but I can see now that should lead my thoughts to obey Christ.
We are often told to ‘follow your heart’, ‘do what your mind tells you to do’
I daresay, that’s the wrongest(pardon my French) piece of advice you can ever take as a Christian.
To lead my thoughts would mean that I tell my mind what it can think about and not just filter the thoughts after they have run through.
Practically, that means that I tell my mind ‘you can’t think that’, not ‘you can’t dwell on that’.
It’s funny that the Scripture uses the word ‘We’ putting the responsibility squarely on our individual shoulders.
God will not lead your thoughts for you; you have to do it yourself.
I need to reverse the trend. I need to start leading my thoughts to obey Christ and not following it
Who’s with me?
